Dear All

Hello

On this day, in 1986, the first episode of the TV mini series
"North and South" was aired on ITV.

Set before the American Civil War, the series was based on the first of the 1980s trilogy of novels North and South by John Jakes.

The saga tells the story of the enduring friendship between Orry Main of South Carolina (Patrick Swayze) and George Hazard of Pennsylvania (James Read), who become best friends while attending the United States Military Academy at West Point but later find themselves and their families on opposite sides of the war.

The slave-owning Mains are rural gentleman planters while the big-city Hazards live by manufacturing and industry, their differences reflecting the divisions between North and South that eventually led to the Civil War.

There was an all star cast, including Robert Mitchum, Gene Kelly,
Hal Holbrook and Elizabeth Taylor.

The 1985 first installment, North and South, remains the seventh-highest rated miniseries in TV history.

In the UK, it was aired in instalments over three weeks.

Did you watch this or have you seen it on video/DVD?

Take gentle care
Very best wishes
xx

used to watch it on telly with my then 14 year old daughter, but just because Patrick Swayze was in it.
Went around shops just last Christmas looking for it for her.Now 37 years old and still loves it.
Got one DVD, and the girl that i dealt with rang another of their branches to see if they had the other two, they did so the girl got them to reserve them while i went to that shop that day.

Just had this DVD set bought for my birthday, sat and watched it over a period of 5 evenings, when it came out in '86 we still had a black and white tv, so got to see it in colour this time!! lol I may have missed the third series first time round as by then I was working shifts and as Patrick Swayze wasn't in that one I may not have realised it was the same series!

The mini series with Richard Armitage was good too, or should I say Richard Armitage was good too:)

Probably because the books had those titles.

The Elizabeth Gaskell novel came first in 1855.

I loved the adaptation.

Rita, yes he was in Robin Hood too.........sigh!

Found 'our' North and South interesting as a lot of my family worked in the cotton mills in Manchester. The cotton mill museum in Manchester is an interesting day out if you are interested in that, it's at Styles if I remember correctly
