Treacle is a completely separate thing altogether. It is thicker and darker than syrup (which is more of a golden colour). Older recipes would normally use treacle for a tart and syrup for a sponge. It is still possible to buy treacle in a tin (Tate & Lyle) and I have some in my cupboard although as I haven't used it for some time, it is probably better as wood glue!!

In a rich fruit cake I always add a desertspn or two - depending on size of cake. Always have it and syrup in larder.
