Dear All

Hello

Hope you are all okay.

Benjamin Earl King was born in September 1938. He is best known as the singer and co-composer of "Stand by Me," a U.S. Top 10 hit in both 1961 and 1987 and a number one hit in the UK in 1987.

He was also one of the principal lead singers of the R&B vocal group The Drifters.

Written by King along with Jerry Leiber and Mike Stoller, "Stand by Me" was voted as one of the Songs of the Century by the Recording Industry Association of America.

The song has been covered many times, notably by Luther Vandross and Martha Wash, John Lennon, Shirley Bassey, Tom Jones, Sylvester James, U2 and Bruce Springsteen.

Take gentle care
Very best wishes

Dear All

Hello

The lyrics of Stand by Me:

When the night has come, and the land is dark
And the moon is the only light we will see
No, I won't be afraid, oh, I won't be afraid
Just as long as you stand, stand by me

So darlin', darlin' stand by me
Oh stand by me
Oh stand, stand by me, stand by me

If the sky that we look upon should tumble and fall
Or the mountain should crumble to the sea
I won't cry, I won't cry, no, I won't shed a tear
Just as long as you stand, stand by me

And darlin', darlin' stand by me
Oh stand by me
Whoa stand now, stand by me, stand by me
*Solo*

And darlin', darlin' stand by me
Oh stand by me
Oh stand now, stand by me, stand by me

If the sky that we look upon should tumble and fall
Or the mountain should crumble to the sea
I won't cry, I won't cry, no, I won't shed a tear
Just as long as you stand, stand by me

And darlin', darlin' stand by me
Oh stand by me
Whoa stand now, stand by me, stand by me
So darlin', darlin' stand by me
Oh stand by me

Oh stand now, stand by me, stand by me
Whenever you're in trouble won't you stand by me
Oh stand by me
Whoa stand now, oh stand, stand by me...

I think I saw him perform on one of the American airbases near here, many years ago, would have been in the 70s

We used the Ben E King version of this song when the mourners were entering and leaving the church at my son Andrews funeral on 8th August 2009.
I never imagined I'd see so many squaddies in tears.
