Can someone please tell m how I defrag on my lap top it is vista

Open Disk Defragmenter by clicking the Start button
click All Programmes
click Accessories
click System Tools
and then click Disk Defragmenter.
Click Defragment Now.

I am ignorant - what on earth is defrag?

Hello Chris....you must have:o)) its where the process cleans up space on your computer, and compresses it. So where you have deleted something and left a space (or something like that), to defrag means it sorts it out and makes it neat.

It seems to me that Sue has done a lot of the Disk clean up suggested by Glittery. I have XP, but to defrag I click Control panel, click Performance and maintenance, click Re-arrange items on hard disk. ( think I initially had a hiccup on this as I didn't know to start by clicking something in the top lefthand corner on this page!)

Chris - it seems to tidy up the files placing like with like - de-fragmentise I think must be the full name! If you are happy to watch paint dry, it is quite amusing to see the colours on the graph it shows gradually blending in with each other

chris, when you delete stuff, it isnt always in a block of data, it is in bits n pieces all over your hard drive.
what defragment does is to eliminate all the redundant bits of info and re arrange things so that the empty gaps are in one bigger block, for example something you might have saved could be( as in a book) some on page 1 some on page twenty the next bit on page 100 the next on page 50 and so on.. defrag moves all this so that it is in consecutive pages, and can access the data quicker....

Probably the best way to make your 'puter run like brand new is to save anything you want to keep to a memory stick or cd and the re-format.
I tend to do that every few months. Anything you have n't saved off the computer will be lost though so take care.
