Thank you Kate.
I have tried on line searches without any luck.
Does anyone know which record office covered Beeston, Leeds in the mid 1800's? I have noticed some Leeds probate were Wakefield and others York.
I now live in Portugal so if anyone could do a look up for me I would be very grateful.
Thanks
Catherine

Might be worth trying the local records office (whichever one covers Leeds). I know some wills appear on the National Archives site but somebody recently gave me a tip that the pre-1858 wills tend to be at the records offices. The ones in Lancashire are recorded in a set of books in Preston records office so whichever one covers Leeds may have a similar set-up.

The ones I found were recorded as, for instance, "Hurst, Joseph, leather cutter of Ormskirk, 1819" so if the ones in Yorkshire do the same and your James Wood did leave a will, you might be able to identify him that way.

How can I find the will of my 4X Great Grandfather if one exists.
He died between the 1841 & 1851 Census, I can't find a death record.
He was a farmer in Beeston, Leeds, Yorkshire, by the name of James Wood
The sons continued as farmers until the mid 1900's so assume the land was passed down the family.
Can anyone advise please.
