I agree with Chris, but nowadays it's a bit more hit and miss.

I have a friend who married using the surname of her husband, as that was her 'known as' name at the time, but not her maiden name.
She eventually divorced and remarried but did not take that husband's name because she wanted to have the same surname as her son from the previous marriage.

First marriage normally if not she may have reverted to maiden name .Widows usually keep their name, divorcees sometimes revert.

For a second marriage do you look up her maiden name or her first marriage surname.Area Wales
