Hello everyone... I'm new to making up my family Tree and have got alot of members already in my tree with the help from my Grandfather with a Great Memory and of which he has alot of birth, death and marriage certificates of family members.
I seem to have come to a halt further up the Tree i go on the woman, i.e birth records, censes e.t.c due to the fact of not being able to find they Maiden Un-married Surnames.
The only thing i can think of is to buy a copy of the Marriage certificate to find this out, is there any other way of finding maiden names out???

Thank-you

Depending on area and years and the name ( unusual or common) , there may be a parish record online ( for example London marriages on Ancestry) that will have the details without you buying the cert..

and of course Freebmd, depending again on how common the names are. this is an example

Marriages Dec 1859 (>99%)
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Collins Ann Kensington 1a 42
Cook Eliza Kensington 1a 42
Courtneidge Ruben Henry Kensington 1a 42
Courtneidge Rubin Henry Kensington 1a 42
Fishlock William Kensington 1a 42

so if you know from the census that Rubin Courtneidge was married to an Eliza you can 'assume' this might be the right one...though the only way of being sure is to have the cert for fathers' names also.

Leanne as Sue has said you don't need to be with Ancestry, however when you go to the Freebmd site you may see an advert for Ancestry search at the top of the page...just ignore it and scroll further down the page to where the freebmd search is ( when I first started I clicked on the Ancestry ad in error and couldn't work out why it wasn't the free search everyone mentioned!)
