New Year's Eve is an evocative time for many, Gwen and the way it has become so commercialised with the charges is going to change it even more in the future as fewer people can afford to go out and celebrate. It was so quiet here, we heard a few fireworks around 10pm and then again at midnight, but it was only half a dozen and no idea where from. No neighbours came out or made any sound, altho there were lights on in most of them.
O.h. didn't even want a sip of Baileys to celebrate, we haven't opened any wine over Christmas as I felt too rough with the fluey cold I have had, and my son didn't want a drink on Christmas day. Normally o.h. would take any excuse for a drink, but he poured his measure of Baileys in my glass and had a glass of water to toast the year and then went to bed! Toyboy, what toyboy? lol

It would have been my late parent's 65th Wedding Anniversary on 29th December, I wasn't even well enough to go to see the Book of Remembrance at the Crematorium where their names are listed together.

Have a good year, Gwen and anyone else on this thread.

Shirley~I,m getting the hang of it Report 1 Jan 2011 01:05

We live in Kent and locally the New Year is a damp squib. Was saying to other half earlier that in South East London neighbours stayed up to see in the New Year and would come outside to wish everyone a happy New Year and do a conga up and down the road as the boats on the River Thames did their Fog Horns and even just after the War the all clear would be played!!
Around here its like death valley except for a few fire works but NO ONE comes out of their houses.
It did take me back too our family house and Mum & Dad who married on Christmas Day who would go to the Pub at 10pm on Christmas Eve for a half of Stout and a Brown Ale and mum would come home a bit tiddly!! We had a late supper too of cold boiled bacon with pickled onions and red cabbage and salad which i loved
I do miss them both. Dad passed 19th Dec 1975 and Mum 31st May 1980
