While researching my family tree i discovered the resting place of my twin brothers who were stillborn in 1957.I also noted that a number of other babies were interred with them.My mother wants to erect a memorial stone, but knows she cant name the other children without the families consent.Any suggestions on how to make the other families aware that their childrens names can be added if they wished.
Its such a sensitive issue i know.

Once you have found out from the cemetery or churchyard authorities that you are allowed to erect a memorial, you could perhaps send a letter to the local newspaper of the town where the cemetery/churchyard is mentioning what you want to do and asking if there are any family members of the other children still in the area.

It is however a sensitive subject and some family members may not like to have things from that long ago brought back to their attention.

Purple **^*Sparkly*^** Diamond Report 4 Jan 2011 04:39

My baby daughter who lived for just three days, was buried in an old grave and when I enquired further (I was in shock at the time so hadn't really grasped what was happening with the burial) I was told it could be reopened and other babies put in there. I asked about putting a marker on there but was told unless I bought the burial rights I could not mark the grave or stop it being reopened. Naturally I paid for the burial rights which are mine for many more years, 75 altogether and it's coming up to her 37th birthday soon, so another 38 years left.
I would imagine that is what happened to your brothers Margaret but I don't know if you would be able to buy the burial rights now that other babies are with the twins. It would be up to whoever owns/runs the cemetery whether you could mark their resting place under these circumstances.

Sorry if this is not the news you want to hear.

Oh Liz, that is so sad. Who thinks up these inhumane rules?

I do hope Margaret that you get through to someone and manage to have a stone erected.
You could start a trend....
I heard some women on the radio/television (Some over 80 years old) years ago, talking about just this subject, and STILL crying after all those years.

I hope you manage to make a mark for your babies and all the others who would be so pleased I'm sure.
Good luck Margaret.

Thanks everyone for all your suggestions. As with you Liz,my mum was heartbroken at the time. There was one consolation in that my mums uncle worked as a porter in the same hospital she had the twins and was able to tell her that the twins were not buried alone. The hospital and cemetery were practically next to each other.Im talking about Smithdown cem (Toxteth Park) and Smithdown hospital Liverpool. What she does remember is paying £2 10s.Although dosent know what that was for, because its a public grave.
Thanks again folks
Im on a quest now. Will let you know how i get on
