Steven- I think Von will be correct when she describes the Electoral register. Over 40 years ago when I worked for the Ambulance Service, if we could't find a patient at the address we had been given we always referred immediately to the Burgess Book/ Electoral Register . We used to trawl through looking for a potential name at a nearby address. |

I had a Kelly's directory in my office when I worked at the local Railway station, wish I had hung on to it, as it probably got thrown away eventually. It was fascinating to look at the different streets and find names of people I knew from school etc |

When i was a young lad , i used to go into my local library and look at a book which had all addresses in(( in that area (sheffield)) i would be able to look up my address to see who lived in our house before us !!! |
