Oh I love fig rolls too, but can never eat just a few, it's often the whole packet which is why I don't buy them too often! Wouldn't want to add butter tho, that's going too far lol

I like strong cheese and ham in a toasted sandwich, or cheese and apple. Must watch out for stronger Marmite. Never a day passes that I dont have some bead and marmite. We also used to eat condensed milk on bread and butter as children.

Marmalade is a lovely alternative to chutney

Hi
I took grandaughter to the ballet on Monday and was discussing with another grandma also with grandaughters sandwich fillings that we had in the late 1940s.
Bought about by necessity since there was nothing else
condensed milk sandwiches
sugar sandwiches
and my particular favourite HP sauce sandwiches.
Ann have to agree with you loved Wheetabix spread with butter.
Take care
Von

Dear Rose
I'm really sorry I seem to have killed your thread.

I hope you don't mind I'm giving it a nudge as I'm sure there are other people who would find it interesting.
Take care
Von

Morning All
I have had best butter on Rich Tea Biscuits, Digestives and Wheetabix. Also butter and jam on Cream Crackers, instead of cheese. Favourite at the moment is a spread cheese and crisp sandwich, but the bread has to be very fresh. I'm a Bovril rather than a Marmite person, and like Jean (Monmouth), have it at sometime during the day.
Best I have heard was when they used to serve dad with kippers and custard whilst in the navy in the war.
No accounting for tastes.

I think the kippers and custard idea came from having scrambled eggs with smoked haddock. It probably was some form of egg custard, mangled by the cooks of the past. Todays forces cooks are well trained.

Now I think I can probably top it all with the friend who used to like dunking frozen fish fingers in his tea.... ?

I don't know whats wrong with cheese and mincemeat as here in the north we always have cheese with mincepies at Christmas.

I thought everyone did until a colleague who came from Southampton said he had never heard of it until he came to Huddersfield but soon he adapted to our ways.-jl
