I find it fascinating how different peeps call the same person different names!
My dad was D**** E**** John, He was known as Jack by most peeps, mam and his mother being the ffirst ,I suspect, Johnnie by his best friends in Tewkesbury, cos he was a John also.
Son is Jonathan, which I mostly call him.lol. Teachers , friends and work colleagues call /called him Jon or Jonnie.

I love traditional names for girls and named my daughter Charlotte.
From quite an early age, she liked to be called Charlie, which I also liked.
She is now married to Sam (Samuel) . Can be quite funny sometimes, as they introduce themselves as Charlie and Sam, and people wonder, which is Charlie, ? which is Sam?.
They now have a two year old son, named Arthur, which I did not like much but now have grown used to it, thinking it was an 'old mans'name!!

Mytwin sons have family names because we liked them and they would not be Unfasionable at any time, My first son has a first name which I chose after my MIL came to the hospital,to tell me in no uncertain manner that her husband and sons name should be his first name and not his second name. Husband and i were so upset that we gave him the first name which we wanted to do from the start! she was so angry she was escorted out and warned not to come back, so he is Luke. The twins have family names Husbands second name for twin number one and my favourite uncles name for twin number 2, although being identical they always "played " with their names and one year did each others exams!!!
Daughter has a beautiful name which again was given to her when MIL complaned that she should heve her full names and none of my mother so my MUM said give her names atha are just for her so that is what we did.
Grnadson is also Liam and grandaughter has a family name and my name as her second name so i feel very lucky but then NEVER suggested names. Husband nunmber two has just one name

Elizabeth is a name that has been carried traditionally thro my maternal side of the family for 5 generations, my grandmother being the only one called by that name, tho everyone shortened it to Lizzie. It was her first name.
It was also hubby' nan's name, she was called Tizzie !
It was my mother's 3rd name. She was known by her middle name, very unusual name and very helpful in tracing rellies on GR cos that is what everyone knew her as.
My second name, tho spelled with an S rather than a Z.
Dau's3rd name also spelled with an S. She was going to be Louise Elizabeth after my both grandparents, but I changed my mind after she was born , so is known by her first name which is Welsh. (variation of love )

Hubby just has one Christian name !!!

My second name is after my Dads Sister Elizabeth, and my first after a Saint!

My Daughters second name is after my Gran, its not a Family name through the generations but an old and traditional name, Charlotte.

My Son has a name which is traditional and used for Kings and Saints over the centuries and his second name after my Husband.

My sisters Sons second names are after my Dad and Grandad.

I think by looking at the Family tree, my Sister, Cousins and myself are the first generation who have used Family names for our offspring.

Hope the tradition continues.

I agree with Merlin, some of the old and more traditional names are making a comeback. You have only to read the 'hatched, matched and despatched column in the Saturday Daily Telegraph to see that. But Lawdy, lawdy, I would not lumber any of my off spring with some of those names.

In my family, the Eldest daughter of the eldest daughter is always named "Hannah Georgina" and has been for years, and I think there are lots of the Old Names returning.**M**.

I doubt very much anyone would say my sons 1st name was traditional lol

Julia Report 10 Jan 2011 12:52

Gt.Grandad, who was estranged from his family, named his children after his own siblings, though non after his wife's side.
After that, further generations were given names that must have been popular at that particular time.

Only for son as he was the image of my father when he was born so much so GP remarked on it, so son has, as his middle name, my father's.

I have my mother's first name as my second, as she had her mothers first name as her second, and thinking about it that seems to be a pattern in the female side further back also.

Dan is named after my mum's father, and grandfather and has my brothers first name as his second.
