Have signed the petition, Treehunter.

Two of the hospitals I have worked in had workhouses, and both have been demolished. One for a new housing estate ( the wards demolished also). Don't expect the houses to last as long as the very basic, but most useful workhouse.

The British government announced Monday it has given protected status to a former workhouse thought to have inspired Charles Dickens’ “Oliver Twist,” a move that should save the building from the demolition.

Thanks for making us aware of this petition. My 3 x gt grandma died in the Strand Workhouse and as such I have a particular interest in the building remaining as an important part of London's social history.

I have signed.

Just to add a bit.

One of the last surviving workhouse buildings in London - the former Strand workhouse on Cleveland Street - needs your support to save it from the bulldozer.

The building was originally erected in 1778 as a parish workhouse for St Paul, Covent Garden, then was taken over by the new Strand poor law union in 1836, later becoming an infirmary for the Central London Sick Asylum District. It was used until recently as an out-patients annexe for the Middlesex Hospital but is now empty and under threat of demolition. During its unparalled 230 years of service to the London's sick, the workhouse was closely involved in pivotal developments in the evolution of health care. A vigorous campaign to preserve this unique building is now underway.

It is also thought to be the workhouse that Charles Dickens based some of his works on.
