thank you Dermot i half guessed that is the meaning.but as you probably know we sometimes guess wrongly .I was just curious because i could not find any reference to the term.

Is this for John Hogan? If you look at the image it says General Labourer.

Paula - that's just a slang expression for potato pickers - a popular backbreaking source of work for thousand of Irish in the 1930s/40s & later.

My grandfather was one such who headed for Lincolnshire each year to help the big farmers there & would return to Ireland on completion of the task.

Is the writing clear? i.e. is thaties correct or could it be anything else when you look at it. I can't find it in my dictionary of occupations.

Has anyone ot any idea what a Thaties Labourer is.
A gt gt grandfather of mine in Ireland is listed in the census as one.
Could it be taties as in potato?
