Thank you ladys was there anything on his parents or his family ,as i had only just found out that my aunt had remarried as her first husband died ,so i order her marriage cert and her death cert ,i dont no if she had any children to James as she was 44yrs old when she married him i know she had two daughters from her first marriage Ivy and Edith ,Ivy was the informant on her mums death cert in 1981 i dont think her daughters ever married as Ivy was still Gooch on the death cert,and in 1939 when the mum remarried they still both had the name Gooch,its just the coates family i would like some information on if possable no matter how small it all helps

A dictionary suggests - One who has care or custody, as of some public building; a keeper or superintendent.

So something like a caretaker, I'd say, charged with looking after a specific building.

Ministry of Works was a government body formed in 1943 during ww2,to organise the requsition of property for wartime use..from Wikipedia,,,,
1939 =War Ministry were taking over lots of building to house troops of the impending war.
So he was obvious in a government job of some sort.Dutch.

Have my uncles marriage cert and on it has his occ Custodian,Ministry of works so what would he do,also can anyone help with his family mum and dad i know his dad was merchant seaman name George Coates,my uncle was James Joseph Coates,just so i can piece the family together thank you
