We keep pump running all year unless water from pump freezes. However when pond freezes over, OH takes a saucepan of boiling water and places it on pond, this will melt ice - put the pan in the same place each day as it will only take a couple of minutes to melt through.

If there is not a large enough air pocket the gas will kill the fish - been doing this for nearly 25 years and it works.

Just dawned on me it is a beer barrel, well I would still use the saucepan and when winter is coming I would wrap bubble wrap around the barrel.

in a pond at ground level, there will always be water at the bottom of the pond and fish will hibernate there

possibly if your barrellpond is above ground level then is it possible that ALL the water has frozen?
I would have thought that the pump would generate enough warmth to stay unfrozen?
(but NOT if the outlet is a fountain jet......)

I take it that you are jesting about the heater, unless its one designed for the job?

ie an aquarium heater........combined with a thermostat,

(or else you will have boiled fish instead of fried!!)

We have a waterfall in our pond and it hasnt frozen up ever. The pond did, with free water near the waterfall. OH always covers the pond with bubble wrap supported on a mesh frame in the winter.
