Help-Researching history of my house

Our family home was built in 1896. I am trying to find out who owned the house since it was built and up to 1974 when my parents brought the house. I have managed to find the owners from 1896 until 1913, and from 1931 onwards. However I cannot find the owners in between 1913 and 1931. I have checked the electoral registers and the house deeds, but the information is not there. I would especially like to know who the owner in 1913 sold the house to.

Does anyone out there know of the records I should be searching, either online or at the local records office, or anywhere else for that matter?

I would be grateful of any tips or pointers.

Many thanks Lorraine

Street Directories? - usually in libraries or Records Offices.

Thank you Chris of Wessex. I forgot about them. They have some Kelly's directories at the Hampshire Records Office, but unfortunately there are a lot of years missing. Hopefully I will be lucky.

I am also wondering about the land registry. I know they hold records about owners of land and property for the present day, but not sure if they hold historical records. I am hoping someone on here will know the answer.

Depending on how big the parish is, ...and how much patience you have, ...you could look at parish records in the hope that the address shows in baptism, marriages or burial records.
If it is a village though, the vicar / clerk might have just logged the village name rather than full address.

Hampshire Record Office have some of their parishes indexed into books which might help with the above searches if you have some surnames to guide you.

EDIT
You could check the 1913 name on Ancestry probates.
Maybe the property was left to a relative with a different surname.

Thank you for the advice Gwyn. I have already checked the parish records and unfortunately, there is no mention of the house name. Also the family that left the house in 1913 emigrated to Australia, taking all the children with them. I am thinking that the family sold the house and land to pay for the trip to Australia and the farm that they purchased when they got there.

Thank you for taking the time to help.

Found this on the HM Land Registry site under FAQ
www.landregistry.gov.uk

Can you tell me if one of my ancestors used to own a particular property and how they came to part with it?

No. A useful website for archive information is: http://www.house-detectives.co.uk/ which contains advice and resources for family historians.

Hi Lorraine
Have you checked out newspapers covering the timescale.
If the family emigrated it might have been reported in the paper or alternatively the house sale might have been advertised. This might give you
agents or auctioneers who might have records.
I'm suprised that the house isn't in the electoral registers. It may not have been occupied for the whole time.
Good Luck with tthe search

Thank you +++DetEcTive+++ I will check out that website.

Thank you Von, I will check out the local papers for the time in question. The name of the actual house does not appear in the electoral registers, but the road name appears several times. The problem is tying up the residents/owners with the correct house.

My Mum has the deeds for the family home, but there are some records missing. So I was wondering if those missing records might be in some depository somewhere.

Thanks again, Lorraine

Lorraine
Have you tried the National Archives at Kew?
I had a feeling that they held records for properties.
Have a look here

A very long shot. I would try A2A and put a few relevant words in search for the Hampshire archives in the hope that I might find a straw to grasp.

Might there be parish magazines in the archive for the relevant period,or parish council minutes? School logs might just give an address.

Good luck anyway.

Thank you Von and Sharron. I have put in a request for an estimate from A2A for valuation documents from 1915. hopefully this will prove successful. Thank you everyone for all the tips and advice. much appreciated.

I also checked out the house detectives website which gives tips on which property archives to search.
