My Ex who I still love once said something similar about me, he found me as a caterpillar and let me go as a butterfly. I didn't return but I never left either.
His new 'wife' calls me butterfly when I phone.

Joy I didn't care but as we had been seperated for years and still friends yes he meant it as a compliment
Since I have been re-married for 7 yrs and he still calls me his butterfly I think he means it well
