An ancestor of mine is listed as a pensioner in 1881 census. He was also only 43 at this time. I am finding it difficult to determine who or where he would be getting a pension from in 1881. Any information about pensions around this time would be of use.

Katy have you looked on the 1871 census for his occupation, may give you a clue. One of my ancestors was in the navy and received a pension.

Try Chelsea Pensioners - they had what they called 'out' pensioners.

Some of my ancestors were Freemen, they had an income from the Guild instead of working. This was described as a pension too.

my grt x 4 grandfather was a Chelsea pensioner at aged 41 having completed 24 years in the army and was discharged on health grounds in 1849

My gg grandfather was a metropolitan policeman, and was in receipt of a pension in 1875 - when he was 47.
