Thank you all for your response. My husband has been onto M.....re Th..n and by taking off the insurance cover for death and loss of sight and limb, our annual premium has been reduced, so we are sticking with them - for this year at least.

I have just changed my car insurance to Aviva, who I found to be the cheapest, and I bought through Quidco getting another £70 back! Good deal I think!

I have used Saga for the past 4 years - they were far cheaper than the other quotes I got - me only to drive, others in emergency only, breakdown included. However, they ramp up the premiums if there are any named drivers under 50, which is not surprising as their market is over 50's.

Direct Line, now part government owned because of the bale out of RBS, were losing money, hence the huge hike in premiums seen in the past couple of years..The business is rumoured to be for sale. Most people I know who used them have now moved elsewhere.

Aviva were also expensive but seem to be bringing their prices down recently in an attempt to increase market share, so well worth a look.

If you have kids who drive their own car, whatever you do don't try to insure in your name in an attempt to save money. The insurance companies are wise to this and in the event of them making a claim, you will find that they are not covered.

My son got his insurance renewal on Saturday for a 2003 Berlingo van. Last year it was £348 for fully comprehensive with protected no claims. The renewal was £619. He almost died when he saw the increase!! Having spent two days checking out dozens of companies he has decided to go with some obscure firm based in Gibralta who he'd never heard of whose quote was just over £400. Most others were in the high £400's or £500's.

He's decided that since all insurance companies quibble if you have to make a claim he might as well just go with the cheapest so that he's legal and hope he doesn't have to make a claim. Hubby and I are now dreading our renewal as apparently all insurance has risen by quite a large amount.

Try the Post Office - it was the cheapest with frills this time last year for OH. We'll have to see what renewal premium they have for the end of the month.

I've found Budget cheap 'n' cheerful, but if you are with DirectLine and you say you're leaving you are likely to be offered a large discount. They immediately cut my wifes premium by 20% for her car and over 40% for our house insurance.

Our Car insurance has had a quick hike in price, and OH has spent some time comparing other companies on the internet. We are currently with M.....re Th...n

Favourites as I write are T.......co, S......ga and Caravan C.....b

The lowest price is from Swift, but we don't know anythign about them.

Has anyone any (polite) suggestions, please.
