AV software, however good it might be, is unlikely to solve the problem with windows updates failing to load. This needs to be addressed. This is the microsoft support page to look at.

It describes how to identify error codes on updating and offers solution to resolve the issue. In addition, microsoft will provide free solutions for security related update failures. Again instructions are in the article.

As far as AVG is concerned, I consigned it to the rubbish bin a year or so ago as it was becoming too intrusive and was seriously affecting performance. When I mentioned it to my son he laughed and said everyone he knew had done the same. Microsoft Security Essentials is far better.

Hi All.
I use AVG 2011 find it very good. My operating system is Vista which I believe many people are not pleased with.
As with all op. Systems need to keep it clean. 1. Run disc cleanup 2. Use Internet Options in control panel to remove cookies & history. Do not pay for Registry cleaners (can cause more harm than good) find a copy of a Windows mag. for your operating system showing how to clean your computer. You can find helpful advice on Microsoft web site. You can change many items on your computer which will improve speed. Do not pay for tune up programs with a little reading you can do better yourself.
Make a note of any changes you make(so you can undo them) only change one item at a time VERY important.

Do you run Anti-Virus software ?
AVG do a free version that is very good. However many people do not run a FULL scan with all boxes checked. A full scan is not automatic,

mine do too for exactly the same thing I get Error Code: 0x80070645
When i google it it say its something to do with a corrupted registry and offers a solution howevr going through the option it comes to them wanting me to pay for a Registry Scan with lots of glowing reports on how it speeded up PC workings.
My grandson said to ignore it as its a money making thing .
