Potty, no, never. I don't ever post my emaill addy. I have a few, and I use them for different purposes. I have always used that account for family history. I was interested in the "renew you computer protection" bit, I am an Apple Mac user and of course very few problems get through their security, which is why it costs more.

There have been a few rumours of this kind, Janet, over the years.

See what you mean, Janet. I wonder if Helen has ever posted her email in a thread on here which could be picked by anybody Googling?

The tax scam has been running for over a year now. I must have had at least 6 of these emails in as many months. They are always filtered and go directly to my junk folder from whence they are deleted.

As ever, never open or worse still respond to any unsolicited emails.

Not so long ago there was a thread about this on the boards, which luckily I read. This morning I received a dodgy email purporting to be from HMRC which I reported to their "phishing" team and deleted. The reply I had from the tax people was this:

Thank you for letting us know about the suspicious email you received.

Our specialist team will look into your submission and take the
necessary action. We cannot always inform you of the outcome of these
investigations but we do act on each submission we get.

Please be aware that HMRC does not use email to contact people about
being eligible for a repayment or to ask personal information or
payment.

If you are concerned that after receiving a HMRC related scam email you
have:

* disclosed personal information (such as password/user ID);
* disclosed credit/debit card information; or
* reason to believe your computer has been exposed to a virus

please forward a report to us at [email protected] so
that we can look into it. If you disclosed credit/debit card
information you need to immediately report the matter to your bank/card
issuer.

Emails such as the one you received are issued in huge numbers and sent
indiscriminately, which is why we recommend using up to date spam
filters and other online protection. HMRC takes online security very
seriously and with law enforcement agencies works hard to identify and
stop these attacks.

The email I had gave a link that asked for bank card details. I do pay my tax online but - strangely - not from this email account. This account is virtually only for Genes Reunited....
