Sue, I think it might be worth putting this on records board also? As there may be people there who might like to sign who don't normally come over to Gen.

If we all took that attitude Anita,All the historical houses and buildings would be pulled down,

Thank goodness we are all different and some of us believe in saving historical buildings.

Although the building is not as imposing as the workhouse in Southwell Nottinghamshire, which was also scheduled for demolition until rescued by the National Trust, these bulidings are a part of our heritage, and should be preserved.

I will gladly sign.

George

Here is a link to the workhouse at Southwell and is a great place to visit.

If it is demolished it will probably be replaced by a ridiculously large number of ' starter homes' which, with their tiny rooms and lack of gardens are just about as cruel as the workhouse was.

It probably not be feasible to keep every workhouse standing but I wonder if there is another of it's type still standing, There were several preferred models under Chadwick I believe but it may even have been a Gilbert's Act workhouse originally. This could give you a much bigger lever and,oh joys,if you can tie it to Knatchbull then you really have something to argue with.

I read the Daily mail article too, on Friday 25th. A interesting article.
They also gave a web address for workhouses

www.workhouses.org

I have had a quick look and it looks a good site.

There used to be a workhouse in Tendring, Essex, that became a hospital for the elderly. I worked there back in 1980, for a few months.
Unfortunatly it is now no longer used, and I am led to believe it is now in a state of direpair.
