Terry, if you take this over to the Records Office board, please copy over all that has been found on this thread otherwise people will waste their time looking for what has already been found.

Looks like the 1851 census of William and Elizabeth confirms it is the right couple with Elizabeth Brown listed as a visitor and probably her daughter born 1830.

In 1851 Elizabeth is listed as born in Buckland Brewer, Devon. My comment re the marriage at Tiverton is that I wonder whether she would have gone to Tiverton at the other side of the county to be married when her children Elizabeth and William were born in Torrington and even when working away from home women more often return to there home to marry?

But by 1871 William is listed as born in Little Torrington so the tie to the Torrington 1841 record looks good as does the birth/christening Kath found on the IGI. If the right family there was also a sister Elizabeth born in 1830 and christened on the same day. Have to go to work now will recheck later

Terry

If you continue with this thread or delete it and move your request to the Record Office have you found your William Brown post his marriage to Elizabeth post 1860? It would help to have detials of a later census with his birth place and age etc to check against the earlier census years.

I can't see a William Brown born in Great Torrington post 1851

Hi, I have a marriage certificate for a William Brown 1860 Oakhampton,Devon which gives his father`s name as Samuel. I have a possible William in the 1841 census living with his mother Elizabeth remarried to a William Milford at Torrington,Devon. Checking her maiden name found it to be Dymond, so was hoping to find a marriage between a Samuel Brown and Elizabeth Dymond. Just got list of marriages from Devon FHS which gives the name of the Brown who married her to be Sampson Brown in 1825 Tiverton. Two reactions from Family so far-a)no way, totally different name and b) might have been baptised with one name and known by another. What do you think? Would appreciate any advice.
