Can you have OCD without being obsessed with actually doing things, but thinking awful things??

Hi Jude. I don't know about awful things but it can be 'in your head'. If I am doing anything repetetive (dead-heading a rose bush say) I HAVE to count them as I go . Plus I never like finishing on certain numbers which have bad memories for me . This is definitely a form of OCD but it doesn't impinge on my or anyone else's life - so not a problem. Take care.x

Hello Paula....thank you for your reply:o)
A friend has really bad repetitive thoughts, but no problem (as far as l know) physical rituals, making sure things are straight etc. l was'nt aware this could also be OCD.
He is being treated for Bipola and is on various tablets, l wandered if the treatment for OCD would be different??

l used to have to count the pegs as l put them on the washing and count when l took them off, also steps. But it was'nt a problem.

Thank you for telling me of your ocd. Take care

Yes, indeed; you can have, extremely distressing, obsessional thoughts without the compulsive element.

Hi Jude! It's normally treated with either psychotherapy or cognitive behavioural therapy - usually the latter in these austere times!

Thanks Fiona, l will look into this more than. Must admit l have seen bits on google, but had not realised you could have it without the compulsive part until now.

Hi Jude, obsessional thoughts are very much part of some ocds but normally are countered by actions, such as counting, washing, etc etc
Has your friend been diagnosed with ocd ?
I wonder if his thoughts are triggered by his medication for bipolar.
Hope he can get more help.

Purple, I wondered that, if it was medication causing it. Jude, has he seen his GP about it? Or is he hiding like most men do.

Hello Jean:o)
l don't think he has mentioned it to his GP, l'm wondering if his counsellor has mentioned it to him though. l'll be surprised if no one has mentioned it to him!!
