Purple **^*Sparkly*^** Diamond Report 12 Feb 2011 04:36

My son's uncle who lives in Essex called me yesterday to tell me my son's little Maltese Nanna died late on Thursday. She was 83 and had been suffering from chronic leukaemia for about a year and then had heart problems before Christmas and was apparently a walking time bomb, we were told then.

She had been having problems sleeping and was feeling unwell so was taken into hospital, where she became unconscious within a few hours. All her family in Malta were with her to the end and she is being buried this afternoon. I hadn't realised they did things so quickly, seems if it wasn't for waiting for her son and d.i.l. from Essex to get there ( they are on a plane as I write) the burial would have been yesterday afternoon.

My lad was her first grandson - altho they couldn't see each other often because of the distance between us, and they couldn't talk much because she didn't speak English, there was a bond there and she was very fond of my son. We visited her just after her 80th birthday in 2007 and I am glad she met him again as an adult, then 25, as she hadn't seen him since he was 13. He went to her home several times with his dad altho I only got to see her once on that visit.

My son had hoped to get to visit her again but hadn't had the money to go, and of course, can't get there in time to attend the funeral but his uncle has said he is representing us all, his daughters and their families, me and my son and other relatives in England and Wales.

This dear lady was a teenager during the siege of Malta in the war so must have known some very hard times, and she lost her husband, my son's grandfather, many years ago but she did have her daughter who never married and a son still living at the family home. Her daughter will miss her most as she had been doing all the caring for her and was her almost constant companion. Her four other sons lived close by.

Rest in peace, Nanna G., a sweet lady who will always be remembered with love and affection.
