One of the best rules to stop mould growing is to dry off tiles and sealants after shower...mould spores will only grow in damp, a two min dry down can save loads of time scrubbing ,,so keep an old towel dry down, leave shower door open,

I am going to agree with tinaj. Over the years I have tried all different methods, I found the Det*ol Mildew stuff brilliant and the mold doesn't seem to come back very quickly.( The toothbrush and bleach method did work but it was too time consuming and the mould seem to come back quickly.)- jl

Hi Shelly Rose,
I always use bicarbinate of soda mixed to a paste with teatree oil, smooth over the grouting and leave as long as you can. It works well and doesn't "gas" you when you get into the shower. Good luck.

Mix strong bleach in water.
Use extra fine wire wool and go over the tiles and work along the grouting.
Rinse with clean water.
Buff dry with soft cloth .
Also good for cleaning marble, ceramic tiles, limestone tiles and also wood.
On wood surfaces always go with the grain.
Only use extra fine wire wool

i have actually used a brillo pad or just a wire wool and its perfect. lemon C*F is pretty good at getting just about any stubborn stains out, including basin and bath. even got felt tip pen out of daughters school polo white shirt when everything else failed.

good luck before your visitors come.

The best I have found for killing mould anywhere is this,

half a teaspoon Oil of Cloves in one litre of water. Put it in a spray bottle and spray where needed. Leave to dry. Kills the spores so they don't return. You can then clean the bathroom with bleach to whiten.

White vinegar is good for grouting it removes limescale which is what make grouting look grubby........,, mould you need to kill the spores first with bleach or they will grow back again before you cover it up with more whiting stuff.

Bleach and fine wire wool should do the trick.

I find something called Grot Buster made by Domest** really good on the grouting. It is dead easy to use ,and I use a toothbrush too.The smell is quite overpowering in a shower cubicle though. It's worth giving it a go.

Hi ShelleyRose

I have a steam cleaner and it works wonders lol. There's also a grouting pen you can buy in hardware stores, W'lko's, B&Q etc which restores grouting to its fomer whiteness.

Good luck

Thanks Frank and tinaj for your replies,
I'll try the mould and mildrew remover you suggest tinaj first,
Frank I never thought of a steam cleaner, my oh says we have one buried somewhere in our garage! If he can find it, I'll give that a try also.
Many thanks,

There are products in DIY stores for cleaning grouting, but they still require a bit of elbow grease.

Why not do as I did and re-grout.

A tube of it should be sufficient and you may not need to dig away any of the original, just apply it thinly over the top. It will look good as new in no time.

Hi ShelleyRose
I never have to resort to the old toothbrush method. My MIL told me ages ago what to do - use Dett*l Mould and Mildew Remover spray - spray the cubicle thoroughly and just leave it to do its thing - don't rinse it off until you next want to have a shower. It may take several goes and stinks the bathroom out for a while but it eventually eats away at the black stuff. I spray and leave the cubicle every week or so now and have not had a problem with it since.
Got my Dad to try it on his shower and it worked a treat - the more black stuff you have to clean off the longer it will take so you may have to reapply on the affected areas daily until it clears it completely.
Good luck

Hi there,
You could hire a steam cleaner, or there are products in DIY stores for cleaning grout.

Does anyone on here know (an easy way if possible) how to get the grouting between the tiles in a shower cubicle clean? I've been using a bleach type spray and an old toothbrush, but it takes a few days and a lots of spraying to get it reasonable, i've also used neat bleach with the toothbrush, but the fumes (even with the window open) are a knockout!
Many thanks in advance.
