Check out the new BBC 1 drama 9 pm Sunday. South Riding is a brilliant book, set in the 1930's, if the adaptation is half as good it will be great.

Yes, it is another re-make. It was originally adapted for television by Yorkshire Television in 1974, starring Hermione Baddeley as Mrs Beddows, Dorothy Tutin as Sarah Burton, Nigel Davenport as Robert Carne and Judi Bowker as Midge Carne.

This one has 3 episodes, apparently.

Yes it was a series during the 1970's my Mum loved it,,, it was her who put me on the reading the book.
The main character is Headmistress Sarah Burton, Alderman Mrs Bedows and Robert Carne, landowner. One of the characters I like is Lydia Holly - a poor, cleaver girl who has to leave school when her mother dies to look after her siblings. Sarah Burton fights for her to be able to return to school.
I'm not sure I'm selling this very well, so you will have to watch it.
Shame it's only 3 episodes, I didn't know that.

The original series was filmed where I lived. We saw the cast around the town. Hope the new production is as good.

Enjoyed the first part of South Riding - but - it was not filmed in the East Riding of Yorkshire, where Winifred Holtby's story was based. The grey stone buildings and walls gave it away. East Yorkshire buildings are mainly red brick, particularly the area around Withernsea, which is the Kiplington of the book.

I have been on the BBC website, and see that the shacks were filmed up the road at Skipsea, etc., but the producers have used places in the West Riding and Leicestershire, I believe, for many of the sets. What is wrong with filming in the area the book was written about?

The cast are excellent.

i enjoyed the first part very much. Don't often see drama set in the thirties so it was a nice change.

I do like David Morrissey, always good drama when he's in it.

I loved the scene where they were in the Upper Fifth classroom. My mother would have been about that age in 1934. Made me smile.

Did not see it, have been watching The Promise (mind you OH and I were both confused with it tonight) and recording something else. However it says it is repeated on Fridays at 1.30 a.m.!!!! It is the sort of thing I like.

Watched episode two last night. Just glad that I am familiar with the book, and not the confused version on the TV screen.
