Hi All

At approximately 1pn NZ time there has been a 6.3 quake in Christchurch, NZ.

Apparently all phone lines to Christchurch are down. There has been an extremely lot of damage to buildings, some are down. A bus was crushed by falling bricks. The Christchurch cathedral has been badly damaged.

If you have relatives or loved ones in the area you may only be able to reach them on cell phones.

There are now reports of fatalities.

Truely horrifying to see the pictures.

Thinking of everyone in the region at this time.

Have read a report this morning that through the night they were able to rescue 11 people from the rubble of buildings which is good news.

A sad story was a mother who had her baby in her arms died from being hit by falling debris. Amazingly the baby survived and is being cared for by rescuers.

I am lucky that I am nowhere near where the quake hit. I am in Wellington but we did feel the quake here. They are now warning us that we may get a biq quake too. We haven't had any bad ones here for a while.

Such terrible suffering and sadness when people are lost to their families.
May those gone rest in peace.

MotownGal, New Zealand has lots of fault lines, not just one. The quake of Sept (and this one) are on a fault line which had not previously identified.

As Annie says, Wellington is well overdue for a big one.

There are several fault lines near me where I live up towards Auckland.

Huia.

The area where I live is surrounded by a fault line. New Zealand is made up of a lot of them as Huia has said.

They've started releasing names of the deceased tonight and it is sad that two babies were in the list.
