I've recently discovered, in my partners family tree, a member of the Royal Engineers. He was in service, and sadly lost his life, during WW1 as a Pioneer. Can anyone tell me what a 'Pioneer' was? He was part of the 319th road construction Coy and served time in Northern France, where he is now at rest. |

The pioneers did most of the jobs that entailed manual labour, such as trenching and tunnelling. They were indispensible to the other troops. |
