I've recently discovered, in my partners family tree, a member of the Royal Engineers. He was in service, and sadly lost his life, during WW1 as a Pioneer. Can anyone tell me what a 'Pioneer' was? He was part of the 319th road construction Coy and served time in Northern France, where he is now at rest.
Regards, Nicky

The pioneers did most of the jobs that entailed manual labour, such as trenching and tunnelling. They were indispensible to the other troops.
