I need some tips on cleaning gold rings and chains.
I used to buy special dips and cloths from the jewellers but was wondering if anyone has any cheaper ways.

If you have any gin or vodka and can spare a small drop, I put mine in that.

I have to own up to putting some of mine in vodka and for those with hard to get at places using either a cotton bud or a soft baby toothbrush to clean the gaps. Toothpicks also work but be gentle.

be very careful what gemstones you are cleaning with steradent,opals/ruby/ saphires or pearls etc will be liable to fracture if placed in hot water,,,opals will for sure, infact opals shouldnt be put in water.

if its just plain gold chains...hot water and washing powder for half hour, scrub with a soft toothbrush .. good rinse after..diamonds rings can also be cleaned this way.

sonic baths are good for plain gold /silver....dont put opals/pearls in vodka or cola just a gentle rub with a damp cloth and dry is all that is needed...!

clean one stone ring at a time....

Try bi carb, I boill the kettle, put into a recepticle bi carb and then rings jewelry etc and pour on the boiling water swish round and leave to soak. It fizzes all the muck out and is quite safe. Elaine.

I would tie them in to an old sock or pillowcase depending on how much bling you have, chuck them all in the washing machine at 90 degrees and then get a nice new brilo pad and give them a right good scrub, they will be well shiny when you've finished ;o)
