NZ Census cancelled

A law has to be passed to cancel the NZ census which was due to take place on 8 March this year. I havent got my census papers yet, but my sister and her OH have.

Why cant the govt. just pass a law exempting the Christchurch area from the census? A lot of money has already been spent on setting up this census.

It is difficult to give a view when I have never been to NZ . Also I do not know what the population figures are. As the disaster appears to have affected the southern island I would have thought that at least the norther island could have continued with the census.

Has the government said anything about simply postponing the census rather than canceling it?

Meanwhile I hope that you and your family are safe, we have read about tremors in the Northern Island as well.

I am not sure exactly what the govt has said, Bridget, I just got the headline that it was to be cancelled, but it needs a law change to not hold one this year.

Yes, there have been tremors in the North Island, there often are. My son lives just our of Rotorua and they have a lot there.

There is also the issue of the fact that the Statistics Department is based in Christchurch and am not sure if they were in the CBD but the staff who were going to do the data compiling and proofreading of the census are all based in Christchurch and at the present time they will be dealing with their own situations and if the building is in the CBD then they don't have access to it at the moment either.

Thanks for that Michelle. As I said, I just read the headline and was annoyed. I didnt read the whole article. Just goes to show we should read everything carefully before jumping in with criticism!
