I thought it was wellknown that gentlemen liked to have something to hold on to - not a bag of bones.

I most certainly fill that category now!!

Quite right Harry - not only gorgeous but with a class that lasted all her life and as you say she was a fine actress - her comedy timing was excellent too.

Think that is a rhetorical question Elizabeth. As far as I am concerned the modern skinny models have nothing like the appeal.

It's a shame that Jane Russell will pretty much be remembered as a sex symbol rather thn an actress. Her other actiivities are well set out above. All credit to her.

The thing that strikes me is that they were all more than a size 10 !!

Would they appeal to todays males ?

I saw Jane Russell in Sydney about 1960 when she was singing in a well known night club whose name I can't remember. She still looked the same. Her measurements were legendary I remember. 36.24,36. The males I worked with used to compare females they met with her.

Mean, moody and magnificent was the description given to Jane Russell for her Hollywood debut in the 1943 film "The Outlaw". She was to become one of Hollywood's most popular stars of the 1940s and 50s.

She brought new meaning to the word cleavage. She was a talented actress, but it was her sex bomb image that made her a star.

Jane was born in Minnesota, the only daughter of an army lieutenant and a travelling actress.

Working to help her family after her father's death, Jane found her voluptuous figure enabled her to do some modelling. With the encouragement of her mother, she saved enough money to go to drama school.

"The Outlaw" was made in 1941 but caused controversy so it was not generally released until 1946.

Janes overcame typecasting and her true talent emerged in a variety of role, such as "The Paleface" with Bob Hope, made in 1948 and
"Gentlemen Prefer Blondes" with Marilyn Monroe and Lauren Bacall.

Miss Russell was married three times. Her second husband actor, Roger Barrett, died less then three months into their marriage from a heart-attack.

Jane adopted three children of her own, and this was to herald a huge international effort on her part. During the 1950s she began a mission which resulted in the adoptive placement of nearly 38,000 children through her organisation, WAIF.

For many years, she exploited her acting career to highlight the plight of homeless children, even speaking before Congress.


RIP Jane Russell, A true star. They simply do not make them anymore.

I was sad to hear of Jane Russell's death and loved her in "Gentlemen Prefer Blondes"

I agree too about the sex symbols from that era...Marilyn,Gina,Sophia and Rita Hayworth....not stick thin but fab. figures!

Jane Russell also did a lot of good work with world adoption.

Jane Russell, Ava Gardner, Lana Turner, Betty Grable and a few others of that era, have never in my opinion been surpassed. They didnt need nudity to show their attractiveness, or sex scenes, they were just who you wanted to be like when you grew up.

Anyhow, you know you are getting old when wild oats have turned into prunes and All Bran.

Jane Russell has died. She was guaranteed to raise the lust factor in any male around his late teens at the time of "The Outlaw".

Yet another actor/actress moves to a better place. Makes you feel old.(I know).
