I seem unusual in not having my 'proper' name in any e-mail address (apart from work of course), I have an old nickname, (only ever used by one person -my ex -who I am friends with anyway) which has a different initial letter from my real name.
This is even used on Facebook - my nephew (who I go on holiday with most years) even asked who I was when I befriended him on Facebook!!
I don't have my photo by my name on there -I have one of my cats.
Friends of friends can find me by family photos - but weirdos would have a hard task!

Anyone who phones me up and uses this name-I just put the phone down.
Any post with this initial letter- I don't bother to open.
I have passed this info on to my 8 year old grand daughter too.

Hi all,

There is a place where anyone can access millions of names addresses and phone numbers...

The phone book!

Unless you're ex directory of course.

You're right Chris - our details are everywhere unfortunately. Sold off left right and centre I expect :)

But several of the tabloids run Facebook (because it's popular) stories and try and create hysteria - as I said, if you read the article underneath the headline there's very little substance to it or justification for the headline.

If people just used common sense on the internet, there would less need for panic. Don't give your address or birthdate or mobile phone to websites! Then it ain't there to be abused or sold on.

Chris, how would paedophiles forming groups on Facebook mean that the Mail might be right about FB selling off addresses and phone numbers? I don't follow the logic.

Facebook is a wonderful social tool if it suits the individual - of course there are nasty bad people on there, there are everywhere but there's nothing more sinister or risky about social networking sites than there is the world in general.

Right, thanks to a bit of welcome help I have checked my facebook out and I have no address and no mobile number on there. I didn't think i would have given it but you never know.

Ann - twice in the past month I have received on landline - bright cheerful young men enquiring how my mobile phone is working and if I am happy with it - they are most upset when I tell them it is fine and I have not used it for 3 years so presumably my details have popped up from somewhere. Always used pay and go.

I was not sure whether it was just America as well. And we'd picked it up, no doubt if they do it it will be worldwide. I did notice that they recommended (they should insist not recommend surely), that no details of under 18 year olds were sent out.

But it is not worth worrying about your address, that is available from so many places one more won't make a difference. And they can phone my mobile all they like 99% of the time it is not even on! I only use it when away from home.

Uggers - Surprising what info there is about us out there. Ever tried googling your name - I did some years ago and found OH and sons and immediately applied to have them erased.

Get enough paper junk through door as it is do not need any more from any source net or post.

Perhaps they are right re Facebook - programme on earlier in week about paedos hiding in Facebook and each time their sites are deleted they start up again. They were warning parents on behalf of children. Esther Rantzen could not believe what police were showing her. Photos the lot.

I've noticed some of the papers have a real thing about Facebook - the headline is misleading isn't it. What the article says actually is that FB are considering allowing third parties to request home addresses and phone numbers from users which, whether right or wrong, is something very different. Usual tabloid nonsense I'd say.

I have checked but being clueless with facebook where would I find if they had my address and mobile number (I think from reading that piece it means home address not e maill address.

And, when I checked my privacy had changed from friends only as I had set it to 'custom' whatever that means. So I have changed it back.

This week came the news that Facebook apparently plan to 'sell on' members addresses and phone numbers. I do not belong but know there are a few of you who do. May be worth looking at.
