You can only use the spouse match if you are a gold or platinum member or buy credits.

As sylvia has said use freebmd its free and easy but only goes up to roughly 1950

or

much much easier

go to www.freebmd.org.uk

find the record (ie, one name of the couple)

click on the page number to see who else is shown.

Before mid-1911, there will be usually 4 names, occasionally 6 or 8, and you have to use a census to find the couple.

After mid-1911, the spouse surname is shown along with the partner's

eg,
Jones George H Smith Birmingham 6d 168 <<<<< click on 168

Jones George H Smith Birmingham 6d 168
Smith Ellen F Jones Birmingham 6d 168

and it's free!

I have just found a marriage in 1960.
Go to "free marriage records"
Fill out the box.
Find the entry on image and it will give spouse surname.
Make a note of district/folio/page.
Repeat with spouse surname.

I'm glad I'm not alone then (or thick) and I did pose the question back to GR without repsonse.

This is the second time this question has been asked recently, so obviously GR aren't making it very clear.

I think that it is a feature of a search of the Indexed Marriage records. When you get the results I presume you click on the a name to get the possible spouses - this feature has been available on freebmd and Ancestry for years.

The following is in the Announcments section, but unless I'm thick (maybe I am?) I'm not sure how it works - is there some instruction missing?
Has anyone else used this feature and if so could you please enlighten me as it would seem like a very useful tool.

'New Feature! SPOUSE MATCH - For all marriages that took place after 1912 we can give you an exact spouse match for your ancestor. All marriages that took place pre 1912 we will give you 3 possible spouse matches to choose from. Now easier than ever to find your ancestors marriages and their spouse!'
