Hi Chico,

If you're enjoying doing your family history,then keep doing it.It has not been a waste of time if you have found out about your family,and enjoy seeing the results.My family think I'm mad doing all this research,but I don't give a toss what they think.I have found out about social conditions in Ireland,the Potato Famine,and I have made several good friends on-line
through GR,I even stayed with my 5th cousin in the Uk when I went for a holiday over there 2 years ago.Genealogy is a fascinating hobby which teaches you a lot about the world around you,and the past.

I must be an anorak too, I like nothing more than adding to my tree, so do not chop yours down yet

Yesterday I went to our local family history and a lady who had been doing family history for years had sent all her collection of transcriptions and reference books to the office. The books on transcription were to be giving freely to anyone who helped and the reference books given to the society. This lady was moving into a flat so no longer had the room. I thought it sad on the one hand but so kind on the other, but so much better than relatives throwing away the collection at a later date.
All research is important, even if other relatives are not interested. By passing the information on, or just sharing, it may help others in future with their research.

If you are an anorak Chico then I have been one for 25 years!.

Chico, You are not alone, I believe that people are either into family history or not which is no different really to me not having any interest what soever about motorcycling who won which race and when etc. because a member of the family was a motor cyclist or my sons enjoy this sport!!

I do this research because I wanted to find out about by grandparents family, then when I learned about them, how hard life could be and also how amazing it was that some survived I simply became hooked.

Catherine I agree with you, we do this for ourselves not for anyone else

my family think I'm mad spending hours trawling through census records, burial records etc, but I don't care. The satisfaction when it all comes together is worth it. I am doing it for me not anyone else.

my family said when i die
they are burning my family tree at the same time

No, it's not been a waste of time. You've learnt a lot, discovered a lot, turned yourself into a family historian / amateur detective / stubborn wotsit / you name it!

Personally, I don't worry if nobody else is interested in what I'm doing. I love the thrill of the chase, tracking them down, verifying all the info, finding out what their lives might have been like ... all of it. Better than watching TV every night of the week!!

If you are interested, and get satisfaction from discovering your ancestry then it's worthwhile.
I find older members of the family show little interest, while a 17 and 20 year old are very interested - so long as I do the research, and pay for the Certs etc. lol.

I've been doing this family history thing for 17 years. I recently got a real buzz out of ascertaining that my family got 3 shillings poor relief to buy a childs coffin. Now that's sad (for two reasons).
