It sounds like an Ancestry mis-transcription - they are notorious for this, as I believe a lot of the transcriptions were made by people unfamiliar with the records.

Hi Deanna. Think Rose could be right. Just done a bit of googling on this and there were Underground Managers in the coal pits it would seem. Think this is far more likely than Mausger. Googling Coal Mine Occupations gives a lot of job descriptions of coal mine workers.

Sorry I am late answering Rose... not on as much as I should be these days.
Thanks for that , but I don't think so. I think it must be something to do with the digging of the coals.
We will come across it one day no doubt.

Does anyone know what an 'Underground Mausger' did?
I think it must have been a Coal pit job, but I cannot find it in the dictionary.
Could I be copying a mis-spelt word?
