Just under five years ago purchased Hoover Upright Freezer. Never been happy with the handle - bad design, each time it is used feels as if it is going to come off. However a few days ago it cracked, discovered we were still covered (just) by five years of free parts.

Rang this morning and - it is only a free part if engineer fits it! How much for engineer to come - £115.00. How much for the handle if I purchase it £45. It is only made of plastic with 2 screws.

We had this handle replaced some time ago, must have been after guarantee had run out and the cost then was circa £20.

OH is spitting feathers and looking for the super glue and muttering about SIL making him an aluminium handle! He wants to know where engineer is coming from - Outer Mongolia!!

Sounds to me like something of an unfair trading practice Chris.

Do you still have a copy of the terms of the parts guarantee that came with the appliance when you bought it.

Yes I have the paperwork - I was thinking of ringing Trades and Standards, perhaps I should.

Got the bit between teeth - rang Tradin Standards etc at County Council - informed me it was definitely Comets problem under Sale of Goods Act.

So I found out the name of manager and wrote him a polite but I am taking no nonsense letter complete with photocopies of invoices and today OH had a phone call from Comet manager informing him that a replacement handle at no charge was on its way!!!!!!

Now I wonder what I can do with the £45 I have just saved himself????

Marion I did look that site thank you and the price was only a £1 or so difference - that is when I decided a letter was coming on!

Now, I dont know if this is relevant to YOUR problem, but we have a chest freezer.........IF there is a lot of space above the contents, say after getting something out, the air on top becomes warmer than the contents.
then on closing the lid there is a noticeable "clampdown" of the lid as this warm air now gets chilled thus sucking the lid down and firmly sealing itself.

IF I try to open the lid now, its nigh impossible, for the suction is too great.......thus ripping off the handle.........yep, weve done it too!!
and nope, ours is NOT a hoover make.....
however after waiting a few minutes it is now easilyopenupable

No Bob with an upright the suction is not that as great as yours, however the design of the handle incorpating a lock is not good and always feels sloppy hence it cracks - both times in exactly the same place.

Hi All,

We bought our chest freezer about 30 years ago from Beja*. And its still going strong (touches wood). But the handle has been off for about 25 years.

We just lift the lid by the 'lip' .

If they are not noticable, I would do without! Find a dental technician.

That sounds like private prices Malcolm, and OH paid £70 to have a tooth out Monday. My denture with three teeth cost about £200 a year ago.

We used to have a Beejam freezer and I seem to recall it lasted 18 or so years. The we bought a Beko and it collapsed after about 8 months whereupon we got this Hoover.

OH retired engineer - only two screws needed - but we have had two handles on it already - paid for one and both have cracked in the same place. This time they are sending a free one!
