My wonderful nan is 101 today. The staff at the home are putting on a tea party for her and the Mayor has been to see her. She can't understand what all the fuss is about. She's a sweet old lady who all the other residents call Grandma.

Hi Agatha, Thank you for your message.

You get a card for your 100th birthday but you won't get another until you reach 105. Personally I think it's a bit mean.

Thought they got them every year Chris as last year or year before an old centenarian complained to Prince William that all five of hers had the same photo of Queen and the next one she got was different!

Thank you for all your kind messages. Sorry for not adding a further reply until now but my internet connection went down very soon after my last reply.

My nan has had a wonderful day and it is so nice that she still has her marbles so to speak so that she can fully understand what was happening. I had to laugh when she told the Mayor, "you must have somewhere else you should be"

Wow, what a great age and even better that your Nan is in such good spirits and so with it still.

I do hope she will go on and get another card and meantime have a lovely time at the home, with no major mishaps or health problems.

Ask her what her secret is, please, and let us all know, there might be hope for a few of us!

How delightful to hear about your Grandma and how much she enjoyed her special day. Two people I have nursed sprang to my mind, one lady I cared for most recently who reached the grand age of 108, she died quite recently only a few months from her 109th birthday, and another who I nursed many years ago in east London who reached 11, 2Both of these people were still alert and enjoyed their life to the full.

The first lady received two cards from the Queen but the more recent lady had one each year after reaching 100yrs,

Thank you for your messages.

My nan says she's done nothing special to live to her age, but then she points her finger at you, gives a certain look and says quite proudly that she's never had a drop of alchohol in her life. Every so oftern though she will have the smallest amount of sherry.

I told her I hope I look as well as she does when I get to her age. She just shook her head and said, "You don't want to get to my age" shge looked quite sad when she said it.

I think the sending of the telegram musyt have changed as I have just double checked. With regard to birthdays they are sent out for the 100th, 105th and every birthday after that. At one time you had to apply for one to be sent but now the dept for work and pensions organises it.

The mayor was telling us that he is due to visit another lady in Derby next week who will be 108, now that is an achievment.

Once again thank you for your kind messages.

Chrissie
