Bought a passat about 6 weeks ago and just been told the servo needs replacing . its only done 73000 miles . Apparently its a common fault wih passats. Anyone out there with a passat?

It's the brake booster pump.

a servo...........loosely speaking is a device which amplifies a small input into a large output..............
one example is a hydraulic jack, another is power assisted steering,
but generally, as Edward says is the brake booster.........if you didnt have a servo.............you would have to push like crazy on the brake pedal......

(if you were on an open road........and your engine stopped and you were out of gear......... your servo wouldnt work, neither would your power steering.......)

Brake pad/ lining materials were classed as hard or soft.........soft materials brake well and didnt need a servo..........but wore out quickly.....harder materials wear better but need more pressure to get good braking.........hence most cars have a servo. or you will need to replace brake pads/linings more often!
Phew!!

Morning...no problems with my servo but I wish there was a rear windscreen wash/wiper!!

Also even if you don't want any heat in the front passenger seat you can feel the air aimed at the windscreen.

Did you not get a questionnaire to fill in.....maybe they leave it a few months actually as we got ours last month, five months after purchase.

I did find the auto handbrake helpful as I broke my left arm on Christmas Eve and when the plaster came off I could drive more or less straight away.

Suzanne,You have to supply your own,Its called a Passenger.:o)> AES. If youy,ve only had it 6 weeks, surly the person you bought it from should fit a new one FOC. **M**.

further to my earlier post.

to test your brake servo.

in neutral, with the engine stopped, depress the brake pedal several times, you'll find that the pedal will get "higher" and harder as you use up the stored energy.

then, with your foot hardish on the brake pedal now start the engine.......the pedal should go lower immediately, and be restored to a lower feel....
