My Great grandfather, Edward Docherty travelled to New York, from Scotland in 1848 on the Lord Byron, arriving in New York on 12 june 1848.
Can anyone help me find out more please?

This would be better on Trying to find board but as a starter...who did he marry, where did he live in USA, did he have children, do you have him on any censuses, and are you going forwards or backwards?

Please post on here...go to my thread participation on the left.
by pm..
Edward married Susan McCann in 1844 in Dunbartonshire, Scotland. He obviously returned to Scotland because he died there in April 1876.I don't know when he returned, which is one of the things I am trying to find out.I would also be interested in knowing if any of the family travelled with him.His children were William, Sarah and Patrick.
Does that help?

Also..if he died in Scotland the death certificate will give his parents names.

Hi,
I know that Edward's parents were Patrick, born 1796 in Ireland and Susan McCann, born 1801 also in Ireland. They were married in 1844 in Old Kilpatrick.
Edward,s children were William b. 1852, in New Kilpatrick, sarah b,1846 in Duntocher and Patrick b.1849 in Paisley.
What I am hoping to find out is why he left Ireland ( to visit family there or look for work?)and when and why he returned..
Thanks for your help.

My only suggestion is to get evidence of one of the children's births...it may give his occupation...or one of the later censuses may do so.

How do you know that this is your man?
It is quite a common name.

Hi,
Thanks for your input. It is as you say a VERY common name and I was hoping that if Edward travelled with other members of the family this would confirm that I am on the right track.
If John and Wiiliam are shown on the arrivalrecords as Edwards brothers then this is NOT the right man.
I have a document from another website which put me on this track but I may have to think again.

Looking at the birth years of the children I doubt that their father was away from home for very long,if at all.
Have you got them in 1851/1861?
