you're not really apposed to new technology are you? since starting this thread querying the advances of firefox 4, you have helped us all see the advantages. we cant do you out of a job here, even if we tried.

Ah yes, those mac things.
I had to use a mac laptop for that weekend in Montreal when I ran away with No.2 to go on roller coasters ... he'd brought his (I work on a desktop with big keyboard and two big monitors). Firs time I'd met those pad things. Hated it. Occasionally use my sister's when I visit, big wide mac thing. Hate it.
But then, when they invented mouses, I remarked to my BFF that I couldn't imagine ever using the stupid thing, as I type extremely well and fast and didn't need aids for the unskilled.
As she does remind me from time to time when I'm trying to show her how to do something on a computer. ;)
Anyhow -- yes, same principle, so there you've given the alternative for those less Luddite than I!

Janey I am working on an apple mac Thank you for your comments and instructions. Its made a world of difference!
I can see what the browser's up to, but for me its on the lower left, a narrow white bar showing in words whats loading.
I can see how the right click function saves so much time. However I do not have a mouse, but have used the track pad for ages.
I go: tap, tap, tap, to highlight the link
press and hold control, then tap to see the drop down choices, choose open in new tab tap tap
easy peasy

I have found a problem, both on this and on other sites.
After highlighting, sometimes the right click doesn't do **anything** meaning no copying, deleting, opening in a new window etc etc. Suppose it might be my computer...... but???

moonbi -- you can still see what the browser's up to, only in the lower right this time (at least for me), a faint box showing what's loading. I miss the progress bar, though.

DET -- I've just figured out what you were saying!
Now, even an *unclickable* link -- the dead text we are stuck with on these boards because there's no html capability, that's what you were talking about -- has become clickable with Firefox 4!
Highlight the "link" -- as long as it's alone on a line, just double-left-click on it -- then right click and select "open in new tab" (or page).
Sorry -- it's actually triple-left-click on it to cover the whole line of text.
Hurray! Two of the worst aspects of this site -- the tiny boxes and the inability to post clickable links -- solved!
For anybody who wants to practise, this is the link for this thread:
http://www.genesreunited.co.uk/boards.page/board/chat/thread/1263832
Triple-left-click on it so it's highlighted, right-click, select "open in new tab".
It's a miracle!
I hope people are reading.
For TTF I think I'm going to start giving the "links" and then typing out, every time, the instructions for using them. (This would also solve the problem of unbelievable numbers of people not even knowing what they are, and the widespread tendency to copy them and put them into Google's search box ...) It will also work for "links" given by PM, I assume

another new feature is the blue circular movement on the tabs top left, to indicate when the new page is loading.
Instead of the blue bar movement on bottom right.

After reading of the benefits you all have outlined, I have just updated to Version 4.
am now experimenting with the new things you talk of.
The larger box to type in is wonderful.

Here I go, expanding the box, la di da ...
I keep thinking of posting this tip somewhere, I'll just toss it in here.
I do ER searches at 192 dot com all the time, free, of course.
You only get X number of free searches (maybe about a dozen?) and then it says
!! you have exceeded the maximum number of free searches !!
It used to reset after midnight, don't think it does now.
Well here's all you need to do. In Firefox:
Tools - Options - Privacy - Show Cookies (button)
Highlight the one in question, click "Remove Cookie". Then Bob's yr uncle and you just start over again.
Be very careful, do not click "Remove all cookies". I have, and you'll regret it deeply.

Contrary Mary - You'll always be a special person :))
I truly don't know if the stretching triangle has always been there, but probably not. OH updating FireFox made me a little more aware of the pages.
As for the right click on a link - Previously when I've highlighted a link on here, there wasn't the option to open in a new tab/window etc. it was either delete, copy, paste etc. Hyperlinks on other sites would automatically open in a new window or tab.
What ever - it makes life easier! LOL

I can't check in old Firefox now. ;) I don't recall it, but it's possible. If so, why did nobody ever tell me?!?
I had a look in IE (I hate IE, and I don't think mine is the most up to date), but nothing there.
Oh look, if you drag it down/right beyond the border, it shifts over to the left and gets even bigger!
My life has changed. ;)

*perplexed now* - I've always had the triangle thing at the bottom of the message boxes to make them bigger......was it just me then? Am I no longer the special one?! LOL

SueMaid -- thank you for your input. ;)
AnninGlos -- jury's still out on the speed thing. I haven't used 4 for work yet, opening multiple great big pages of stuff, so we shall see.

Oh DET --- thank you thank you thank you!!!!!
The compose-message boxes at this site are bizarrely horrifically smalll, and this is wondrous! I have done it and it works. This deserves a thread of its own!
I sure hope it works on the edit box too, which is even worse than the add-reply box.
How did you discover this??
Off to check out the edit box ...
(For the right-click open-in-new-tab thing -- you don't have to highlight it, just put your cursor on it and right click. I do it hundreds of times a day (I open pages from google results in new tabs each time). The thing with 4 is that they've reversed the order of open-in-new-tab and open-in-new-window and I have been opening new windows willy nilly for a day now ...)
edit -- yes it works for the edit box too!

OH did ours last week as well and admittedly it was disconcerting to find the tabs at the very top of the screen.
The only other difference (which may be a co-incidence) is that I've noticed a right handed pale green/grey isosceles triangle on the reply box on this site. It is made up of 3 x 3 x 3 dots on the bottom tight. if you click and drag, it makes the reply box bigger.
Oh, and if I highlight a link, I can right click on it and open in a new tab or window. Perhaps that option has always been there but I've only just cottoned on - lol

Im using firefox 3.6.16 and have been getting my update message.
Until now I have been happy, with the way it is. But if version 4 is indeed faster then I may give it a go.
Ive seen the options for preferences in the Tools, and as I had been having problems searching within my own tree on GR, used it today to clear the cache. But it didnt make much difference
Gr support told me to do this.
I bookmarked this thread for future ref.

Latest version, I just installed it today.
I thought we might trade tips and comments.
1. It has the tabs upsy downsy -- they're above the address bar where they used to be below. Pointless twiddling, from my point of view. Easily solved:
- right click on the toolbar - uncheck "tabs on top"
2. The scrolling is bizarrely and horribly jerky. There are apparently add-ons you can get to deal with this, but I just found the easy fix.
Tools-Options-Advanced-General
- uncheck "use smooth scrolling"
Hmm. You'd almost think Bill Gates came up with that one. ;)
3. This one may not be of general interest -- when my Firefox crashes, or when I need to restart it because it's dying from my excessive use (I tend to have a couple of hundred tabs open at a time ...), I want it to restart with all my tabs intact. No.1 has pointed out that I need to set it as follows.
Tools-Options-General Startup-When Firefox Starts:
- select "Show my windows and tabs from last time"
(I think that may not be necessary, I'd still get asked whether I want to "restore" or "start new session", but I'll do that to be on the safe side.)
Anybody else?
No.1 says FF4 is hugely faster than 3, which was certainly what I was looking for. So far haven't noticed a big difference, but I've only been using it this afternoon, and haven't done anything work-related with it yet, and that's when I'm a browser killer. ;)
