Mine was a chef in the forces for a very long time so he always operates portion control. So not enough gravy, not enough butter on my toast, yes I know I could always butter it myself.

I remeber wading through something he had cooked which was balanced like a junk food meal with loads of Quorn popcorn sized things which had been fried and chips with a little salad garnish.Like, when would you ever do a salad garnish at home FGS?

Later on,wracked with indigestion, looking in the fridge for a bit of greenery,I found a whole big bowl of salad he had not used apart from the garnish.

And while we are at it.I saved a little wild strawberry that was dug up when the cone digester went in.I was nurturing it in the herb bed and visiting it daily. One day it was gone!

I asked him if he had taken anything from the herb bed and of course he had touched nothing................well,apart from that dead coriander he threw away, into the dustbin(!?) There was my little strawberry.

It went back in the herb bed, he was lucky he didn't as well, and is now a lovely bushy little plant.I am looking forward to a few teeny weeny strawberries off it this year and he is not getting any!Sod him!

By jove I feel better now!

Many, many years ago, in the throes of a bout of morning sickness (in the evening no less), I asked my OH to finish cooking his evening meal. All he had to do was to thicken the gravy and pour it over his lamb chops and veg.

He decided he could do that and I retired to perform the not-to-be-mentioned task usually associated with morning sickness.

A little while later, and feeling much better I returned to the kitchen to find him almost finished eating. I inquired if he had enjoyed his meal, and his reply was, "OK, but the gravy is a bit runny and very sweet." I asked him to show me what he had used to thicken the gravy. OH goes over to the cupboard and brings back the container clearly marked, "icing sugar".

Fast forward many many years...... OH now does almost all our cooking, is an excellent cook, and best of all has learned to read the container labels.
