Shirley~I,m getting the hang of it Report 6 Apr 2011 22:06

Hubby was having a cataract op today. He was to report to Maidstone Hospital Day Surgery ward at 12.30pm.
We got there before 12 but parking was a nightmare! finally got a parking spot and then reported in at about 11.55 .Was hoping they would be seen in the order they arrived, Nope didnt work that way . he went in about 12.15 to the holding area no relatives allowed so I waited in the reception area.
Got the urge for a loo stop so went to find one and then to the League of friends T Shop for a coffee and scone . Well some time later was still sitting in the reception area to see faces who had reported well, after him coming out with their eye patches(and Polly's on their shoulders lol) coming out to go home .
Around 4pm a ward orderly came out to ask who we were waiting for and I was told he ain't gone in yet but you can come and sit with him!!!. some 45 mins later he finally went in .the LAST on the list and around 5.35 he came out with his eye patch.
We finally left there at 6.20 getting home at 7pm ,both knackered and dying for food as we hadnt eaten since before 9am.
The cat was cross legged for the loo as she had been indoors all day. I did ask how they decided the order the patients were dealt with and was told it was up to the surgeon, he would say who he would deal with . Peeps who had ambulances booked would be given priority cos ambulances dint wait . Fair enough BUT why get everyone in before the ops started at around 2pm if they knew what order they would be dealt with.
We arrived home at 7pm knackered and hungry . And to add to it all ,it cost us £6 parking fee for the privilege of sitting around all afternoon. !!!

Shirley
I am sorry for your experience at the hospital.
BUT it is nowhere nearly as bad as my cousin's husband.
He had to get from Watford to St Albans with no car as he couldn't drive !!
The operation was started, but the lens slipped behind the capsule?
After 3 days, Off to Moorfields in London, again using friends for transport as not allowed to use Public Transport because of the risk of infection.
Put on emergency list told to wait for call. Had 6 different drops up to 3 times a day, at different times !!!

THREE WEEKS later finally called back to Moorfields and operation done.

He is progressing well now Thank goodness.

In between visits to Moorfields and back to St Albans............. but no clinic that day so had to go to Watford, walking distance of where they live !!

Don't think he will want the other eye done do you ?

Linda

LINDA Nope guess he wont want a repeat of that experience, .

Hubby needs his other eye done and isnt looking forward a repeat performance either.
He said to me on the way home he didnt want to go through it all again from when the eye surgeons minion said you need the cataracts done to all the hassle with appointments etc. We're not in the area of the hospital for Public Transport so goodness knows how they think people get there without there own transport..Thank goodness I drive BUT not that often so am a bit rusty and I wasnt looking forward to the drive down the M20 but we had missed the bulk evening traffic by then so it went OK.
