Hi Diane and welcome. Also consider that a person might have been born out of wedlock and may be registered under the mothers maiden name. PH.

And don't assume that the spelling of the surname they married under is the same as how their birth was registered.

You need to think creatively but on FreeBMD if the birth was registered and is after Sept 1/4 1837 you can ask them to include variants in the search.

Why don't you post the details you have and we can look for you. I'll have a go whilst I'm having my hot choc before I go and tidy and clean the car.

Civil registration didn't start in the UK until the Sept Q 1837. Even then it wasn't compulsory for many years (can't recall when).

If a child was adopted, then it is unlikely that there will be one in his birth name. Conversely, before the formal adoption laws came in during the 1920's, it would be possible that he was registered in his birth name, but only knew and used his adoptive parent's surname.

Unless you have done elsewhere, if you care to give the details you know - name, approx yob and where - someone could have another look for you.

hi.I am quite new to this so would appreciate some help. Is it normal for there to be no birth record of someone even though there is a marriage and a death record for them?
