Book in advance using a site such as "The Train Line". Depending on the journey it can cost but a fraction of the price you have to pay on the day.

My son has traveled home and back for £15 each way when the cheapest day return was over double that. and the period return even more....!

Now Dizzi, you know you enjoy having the grandchildren BUT you must use one of the suggestions already given on here. i suspect that you actually enjoyed having the children with you....
I must say though that the price is rather amazing, I haven't been on a train journey for several years.

My daughter always uses the train when taking her children to London and I know she always books in advance, so give it a try

Bye for now

19.57 hrs Spain

.

When I travel with D on family railcard it is 1/3 off childs fare and 1/2 off mine.... for eg I am going up to Chester soon...with the railcard it will be 14.45 return , without it would be over £25

Hi Dizzi,

Don't think we have 'spoken' before. Last year I travelled with my 83 year old Mum to the UK. We travelled by train - booked well in advance from Nz via internet. We travelled London-Bristol-Exeter-Manchester. It was very reasonably priced by booking in advance.

Naughty me, got told off by the Conductor on Bristol-Exeter line. We had inadvertently caught an earlier train than I had booked. Lucky me, I was told I 'could' have incurred a fine. Maybe she took pity on a Foreigner....

Train journeys are a novelty for me - really enjoyed myself.

Take care,

Susan

Haha Susan - one of the quirks of our cheap deal rail fares is you must be on the right train. Last year a man was either fined or threatened with a fine because he got off his train one stop before the one he had booked for and therefore broken the contract!! Unbelieveable but true.

On one occasion when travelling on a cheap deal where I had to change 3 times events made each train late and I was sooooo stressed by the end of the journey I wondered if it was worth it!
However just before Christmas when the weather caused disruptions they didn't seem to care what train we were on.

TICKET GUY CONFUSED,,,,WHEN TRYING FOR THE BEST DEAL.
EVEN WITH CARDS
A DAY TRIP IS STILL WAY TO EXENSIVE.
