Osmosis; Chlorophyll; transpiration; photosynthesis.

(sorry it's not the kind of biology you had in mind)

Can anyone offer a 30 word PLAIN ENGLISH definition for each,or any, of the above. For a school exam.

Happy days

"Osmosis is the movement of water from a less concentrated solution to a more concentrated solution through a partially permeable membrane."

From the BBC GCSE bitesize

and from the same place

"Water on the surface of spongy and palisade cells (inside the leaf) evaporates and then diffuses out of the leaf. This is called transpiration."

I'll have a go from memory,

Osmosis is the passing of a sustance from one side of a barrier to the other,ie, oxygen molecules from the lungs to the bloodstream.

Photosynthesis is the absorbtion of the suns rays to create Chrolophyll, which is what makes leaves and algae green.

And I think transpiration is a posh word for sweating.

It is a hundred years since I did biology,so you would be better off googling these,or look in a dictionary.

Chlorophyll also makes it possible for plants to convert carbon dioxide & water, in the presence of sunlight, to oxygen and glucose.

see wisegeek.com.

Why are we doing your homework for you Harry:)

Hope i don't seem too ungrateful, but the last answer is the kind of thing i wanted and RRs second post similarly.

Semi permeable membrane is a big call for me, and I'm sure for my grand-daughter.

Full marks for effort to both you girls.

Happy days
