I'll try to remember not to take on 3 men if there's a next time but I bet I don't remember (I'm an Aries}. I know you didn't mean I shouldn't be a good neighbour Patricia you were trying to put me on the right track, the advise was sound and I took it as that. Elaine.

Elaine, I was not implying that you wasn't a good neighbour, like you I was brought up the same, but I'm afraid in these days you have to look after yourself first.

My neighbourhood watch leaflet states quite clearly not to approach under any circumstances, but to take details of vehicles, descriptions etc and call police

I know i'm an idiot but it was broad daylight 1100am. I was brought up to be a good neighbour and even now in my immediate area we look after one anothers property. I phoned her mum so if needs be she could have called the police.Elaine.

It could have been simply to check the meter. The reason I say this is: about 6 weeks ago I received a letter from my gas provider stating that they had tried to check my meter 3 times (3 year safety check apparently), no note through door saying they had called and no unanswered rings on my door bell although I could have been at work. The letter gave me an all day appointment for two days after receipt of the letter. Luckily i wasn't working that day, chap turned up just after 8am and was gone less than five minutes later. The letter also stated that if I didn't keep the appointment they would apply for a Court Order.

Similar thing happened to a friends 80 year old mother last year who was in hospital at the time. Luckily, my friend opened the letter and was able to sort things out.

Don't think I would have been brave enough to approach the men like you did. Would probably have phoned the police though.

In answer to your question are police required then no they are not unless the bailiff requests them to be, I remember seeing that on one of those tv fly on the wall programmes once.
Whether they can enter the property without the owner present seems to be dependant on why the order was granted, and if they have been in the property before. There is a bit on the directgov website about this

Personally if I had seen this I would have called the police myself and not confronted them, you could have put yourself in danger

This morning I was doing my front garden when I noticed a van with 3 men alighting. I live at 65 and they went to 59 and knocked and hung around when nobody answered going to the back of the house , then back to the front door. A little while later I saw them entering the house via front door, then the burgler alarm began. I went to the house and asked if Emma was in, the reply was no I have picked the lock. Well I was gobsmacked. I asked to see identification as they said they had a court order to enter the premises. It was a man with an Npower nametag and I asked to see the order, which he duly showed me, it was on a sheet with other properties listed and there seemed to be a signature of a court official. I left, went indoors and phoned Emmas mum who was very upset saying Emma was in hospital as she had a bleed. Emma is expecting her 2nd child in August. Her mum said she would phone her husband and I left it with her. Surely if anyone has an order to enter property they have to have a policeman with them don't they. Elaine.
