Afternoon all. This is very annoying and frustrating. While searching for ancestors I often find that in the 1700s someones mother is named in birth records but the fathers name is UNAVAILABLE. Does anyone have any idea why this is so. Thank You.

I suspect that that was because the child was illegitimate. The same applies to christening records in the 19th century as well.
